SPLL is a place to try things — side-by-side, with shared purpose.

Learning the work of a Clubhouse isn’t always straight-forward. Clubhouses are living communities — built daily from choices made about the space, work, and relationships that shape the therapeutic potential of the community.

The Social Practice Leadership Lab (SPLL) is a new space for Clubhouse colleagues to challenge their expertise and build knowledge and skills that matter. Over a six-month period, member and staff colleagues will explore all aspects of social practice, test new ideas in their own clubhouses, and grow as leaders of recovery-oriented community.

A clubhouse focuses on people as members — not patients or clients. The Lab carries that same belief: everyone here is a colleague, a contributor, and a leader-in-the-making.

APPROACH

Five essential elements, one shared practice

The curriculum is organized around the five elements of social practice, which describe the essential mechanisms at play in the Clubhouse Model.

01
social design

How do we create a space and environment supportive of recovery?

We treat the Clubhouse itself as a designed environment — its rooms, its rhythms, its rituals all shape how people feel, contribute, and belong. Here we learn to read that environment and shape it with intention.

02
engagement

How can choice and action drive recovery outcomes in all aspects of the clubhouse program?

Recovery moves when people choose to take part rather than being placed. We explore how invitation, ownership, and meaningful work turn members into authors of the day.

03
relationships

How can we open and grow authentic, new relationships that support, challenge, and celebrate people in their journeys?

Side by side — member and staff — we practice the kinds of relationships that hold people accountable and lift them up. Relationships built on a genuine need for one another.

04
feedback

How do we integrate useful, compassionate feedback into structured and more personal interactions with each other?

Feedback is how a community learns. We build the skill of giving and receiving it with honesty and care — in meetings, in shared work, and in the quiet moments in between.

05
transitional environments

How can we create spaces beyond the boundaries of the clubhouse for risk-taking and rebuilding of a natural life?

Recovery doesn’t end at the front door. We design bridges into work, school, and community where people can take real risks and rebuild a natural, self-directed life.

What you’ll do

01

interactive workshops

Hands-on sessions where colleagues work through the model together — discussing, role-playing, and pressure-testing ideas drawn from real Clubhouse experiences.

02

clubhouse improvement projects

Take what you learn back to your house. Each clubhouse team will implement a real improvement project that puts social practice to work.

03

personal & professional development

Grow as a leader of recovery-oriented community — building confidence, voice, and skills that travel well beyond the walls of the Clubhouse.
