Inspiring Stories from our Form Communities Family

Triumph Through Adversity: Celia's Journey from Struggle to Empowerment

Celia, a dedicated mental health peer specialist and program coordinator at Peer Academy, finds her true calling and immense joy in this role. Living with schizophrenia, a condition prevalent in her family, Celia struggled for years without recognizing her condition, even during repeated month-long hospitalizations. This period was marked by significant challenges, including auditory and visual hallucinations, delusions, and an inability to work or drive.

Her life took a positive turn in her late twenties when she committed to her treatment plan while living with her aunt. This commitment led to substantial personal growth, including starting a YouTube channel and Instagram account where she shared her experiences with schizophrenia, garnering significant support.

Celia's journey of self-discovery and advocacy expanded through her volunteer work with Students With Psychosis and NAMI, where she shared her story at various schools. Her passion for helping others led her to establish a nonprofit, focusing on providing one-on-one peer support and support groups for individuals with schizophrenia.

When Celia found Peer Academy 2020 and took the MHPS training, she felt right at home. This path led to an internship with Peer Academy to become a certified MHPS. In 2022, she eagerly joined Peer Academy as a contractor, which quickly transitioned to a full-time role.

Recently, Celia was certified as a Peer Specialist Supervisor, a milestone that reflects her nearly 36-year journey of overcoming challenges and supporting others. She feels a deep sense of gratitude for the unwavering support she received throughout her life, which has been instrumental in her current contentment and success.

Unheard Stories,

Unseen Strengths

This month, our book spotlight shines on Alice Wong's "Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century," a must-read for those exploring the intricacies of mental health. In this groundbreaking anthology, Wong masterfully curates a diverse array of personal narratives, offering a window into the lives of individuals with disabilities.

The book challenges common perceptions, highlighting both the struggles and triumphs of individuals navigating a world not always accommodating of their needs. These narratives not only deepen understanding of mental and physical disabilities but also celebrate the resilience and richness of the disabled community. The book reminds us that in our shared vulnerabilities lies our greatest strength.

Poem of the Month

"Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all."

Excerpts from "Hope is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson beautifully encapsulate the essence of hope as a constant, unwavering presence in our lives. It's a reminder that even in times of uncertainty or hardship, hope remains within us, a quiet yet steadfast companion. Let these words inspire us to listen to the hopeful melodies in our own hearts, uplifting us and guiding us forward.
