Celebrating August's Achievements
This August was a time of progress and milestones. As we move forward, let's carry the lessons and growth into the months ahead. Welcome to another edition of The formula.
Grandstaff Manors
Grand Opening of Grandstaff Manors
On August 1st, we proudly opened Grandstaff Manors, a new supportive housing program that fulfills a critical need for our community members. This project is a response to the lack of accessible and dignified housing that many of our Clubhouse members have faced over the years.
Grandstaff Manors, located in San Antonio’s Dellview neighborhood, offers affordable housing with rent set at just $400/month, promoting autonomy and stability for members. The property includes four houses with 12 units, and occupancy is reserved for Clubhouse members in need of stable housing. Members also receive peer support and transportation to the Clubhouse, ensuring they stay connected to essential recovery services.
This initiative is based on the permanent supported housing model, commonly used in addiction recovery, and adapted to suit the mental health recovery context. We believe that with stable housing and social support, members can focus on achieving their recovery goals and move on to more independent living situations.
While we are in the early stages, filling our first unit and continuing to furnish others, we are committed to expanding this essential program with the support of local partners.

San Antonio Clubhouse Celebrates 21 Years!
On August 7th, 2024, we celebrated the 21st anniversary of the San Antonio Clubhouse with a fun-filled day for our members. The festivities included a lively pie-eating contest, a dunk tank where everyone got a chance to dunk their favorite staff members, and rounds of Lotería, bringing everyone together for a day of joy and community.
The event was a wonderful celebration that showcased the spirit of connection and support that has been central to the San Antonio Clubhouse for more than two decades. Here's to many more years of creating lasting connections!

Finding Our 'Why': Reflections from Mary Maxine Bobbitt
Wrote by Mary Maxine Bobbitt
I’ve been feeling something on my heart lately about the importance of remembering our "Why"—the reason we do what we do. It’s easy to lose sight of it when what started as a passion becomes routine. But today, I was reminded of our deeper purpose when I spoke with Michael, a Clubhouse member moving into Grandstaff Manor. Hearing him talk about the challenges he faced—his isolation, his struggles—made me emotional. Yet, what struck me most was his happiness at finally having a safe, comfortable place to live. His gratitude reminded me why we continue this work, even when it feels overwhelming.
Another moment that stayed with me involved a young man at the Haven for Hope shelter who has cerebral palsy. He was angry and frustrated, struggling with his situation. After some time, he sat down with me and a couple of our peers, and he shared some incredibly painful experiences. The trust he placed in us to listen was profound. I realized that what we offer isn’t just services; we provide a space where people can feel heard and seen without judgment. That trust is my "Why"—it’s what keeps me grounded in this work.
These moments don’t happen every day. Most of the time, we don’t get to see the full impact of what we do. But when we do, it’s like a gift. It’s a reminder of why we’re here, and why we need to keep pushing forward. If you’ve found yourself caught up in the everyday routine and lost sight of your "Why," I encourage you to take a moment and reconnect with it. That’s what keeps us going, and that’s what makes the work we do truly meaningful.

Quote of the Month
“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer."
- Albert Camus
Beneath the chill of life's darkest moments, there resides an inner strength that remains unshaken. Camus’ words remind us that even in our most difficult times, we carry an enduring warmth and resilience within. This "invincible summer" is our capacity for hope, healing, and growth—an ever-present source of light that guides us through the coldest of seasons. No matter how deep the winter, trust in your inner summer to see you through.
